Anatomic compatibility of pear and quince trees grafted on Pyrus calleryana and Chaenomeles sinensis rootstocks PAB

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the graft growth and the anatomical characterization of pear (Pyrus communis x P. pyrifolia) and quince (Cydonia oblonga) cultivars grafted on Pyrus calleryana and Chaenomeles sinensis rootstocks. Sprouted graft percentages at 60 days and the length and diameter of the graft sproutings at 120 days were evaluated. Stem cuttings from the grafting region were performed in transversal and longitudinal sections, and the secondary xylem was separated for tissue comparison. The pear trees showed good development on P.calleryana rootstock, and the anatomical sections showed that the vascular tissues were connected, which did not occur when the trees were grafted on C.sinensis, in which the grafts sprouted, but...

Anatomical aspects of IBA-treated microcuttings of Gomphrena macrocephala St.-Hil BABT

Gomphrena macrocephala St.-Hil. (Amaranthaceae) is a perennial herb from the cerrado with medicinal properties and ornamental interest. Plants can be micropropagated through nodal segments, but acclimatization is difficult. The aim of this study was to establish a relationship between anatomical aspects of the roots and the acclimatization process. When cultures were supplemented with IBA, callus and thick and frangible roots appeared at the base of the microcuttings. A fragile vascular connection between roots and shoots was observed. Abnormal adventitious roots showing alteration in the vascular cylinder and hypertrophy of the cortical cells were also noted. These roots interfere in the transfer to extra vitrum conditions. Anatomical confirmation of root parasitism in Brazilian Agalinis Raf. species (Scrophulariaceae) BABT

Agalinis Raf. consists approximately of 60 species, 14 of which occur in Brazil. The genus presents predominantly american distribution and the Brazilian species appears mainly in high areas of Minas Gerais. The North-American species are refered as hemiparasites, but there is no anatomical data about it in relation to the Brazilian species. Anatomical studies were conducted to verify whether the Agalinis species from Brazil were root parasites or not. The eight species analysed were presented haustoria which varied in shape, arrangement and size. They were generally elliptic or globose structures and mostly were tightly sticked to other roots in a solitary or clustered manner.
